Teresa Laiz: The Art of Castanets at the Heart of Madrid

The Madrid-born flamenco artist presents her series of castanet concerts at Teatro Flamenco Madrid, blending tradition and modernity

Teresa Laiz, a native of Madrid and a leading figure on the Spanish arts scene, has devoted more than three decades to the study, performance and promotion of castanets as a concert instrument. Often associated solely with folklore or dance, in Teresa’s hands the castanets take on a leading, solo role, treated with a technical and expressive depth, on a par with any chamber instrument.

Having trained in Spanish dance and flamenco, Teresa Laiz studied with leading figures in the field such as Farruquito, Rafael de Córdoba and Víctor Ullate. However, her artistic journey led her to specialise as a castanet concert artist, an uncommon discipline that she herself has helped elevate to prestigious stages.

Since 2006, Teresa Laiz has composed her own repertoire and has been invited to perform in auditoriums and theatres across Spain, Europe and the Americas. Her work is the result of a mature process of reflection and experimentation which audiences can now enjoy at Teatro Flamenco Madrid.

Castanets: a bold addition to Teatro Flamenco Madrid’s artistic programme

Teatro Flamenco Madrid, a landmark venue for professional flamenco and other musical expressions linked to Spanish culture, has added the series “Teresa Laiz in Concert” to its programme. This series of performances allows audiences to discover the expressive richness of castanets in their most refined and professional form.

The series represents a commitment to diversity within the theatre’s regular flamenco programming and responds to a growing audience demand for performances that combine tradition with new interpretative approaches. With her understated style, technical mastery and strong communicative presence, Teresa Laiz offers a musical experience suited both to knowledgeable listeners and to those discovering the instrument for the first time.

In the artist’s own words, “Castanets are an instrument that speaks, that dialogues with the body and with space. When you place them centre stage, they have a unique voice.”

Featured concerts: Repicando el alma and more

One of the highlights of the series will be the concert Repicando El Alma, Echoes of the Soul as it could be translated, scheduled for 30 March 2025. This highly personal programme combines Teresa Laiz’s own compositions with adaptations of Spanish classical repertoire. As the artist explains, the aim is “to turn the instrument into an emotional extension of the performer, not merely a rhythmic accompaniment.”

In addition, on 15 June 2025, Teatro Flamenco Madrid will host the end-of-year concert of her school. This performance will showcase Laiz’s educational work with new generations of performers and offer a close-up view of how the instrument is being projected into the future.

Both events combine live music, strong stage presence and moments of introspection, always in an intimate format that allows the audience to feel the vibration of the instrument just metres from the stage.

A theatre, a context, a complete experience

Attending a Teresa Laiz concert at Teatro Flamenco Madrid is more than simply watching a performance, it is an encounter with an art form defined by authenticity and dedication.

Located in the very heart of Madrid, the theatre offers excellent acoustics, a limited seating capacity and an atmosphere that fosters a close connection between artist and audience. This series fits perfectly within the venue’s artistic vision, which for years has sought to diversify its programme without losing sight of flamenco’s roots.

Although Teresa Laiz’s performances move away from traditional flamenco dance, they remain deeply connected to it through shared origins, passion and a profound respect for music as a means of cultural expression.

The Teresa Laiz at Teatro Flamenco Madrid series is a rare opportunity to enjoy a highly distinctive form of performance of outstanding artistic quality. The richness of the castanets, Teresa Laiz’s interpretative precision and the theatre’s intimate setting come together to offer audiences a deeply resonant sonic and emotional experience.

From Teatro Flamenco Madrid, we invite you to discover this art with a unique identity of its own. Tickets are now available on our official website. Don’t miss the chance to attend a concert that brings together tradition, innovation and emotion in the heart of Madrid.
