Raquel moved to Madrid with her family when she was 12 in search of new opportunities and attended the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Mariemma. This was a crucial stage in her training, where she had the opportunity to study Spanish Dance in depth and acquire a more comprehensive understanding of flamenco as an art form. “When I arrived in Madrid, everything changed for me,” remembers Lara. “Flamenco became my life and my only professional direction.”
During her time at the conservatory, Raquel Lara participated in many flamenco dance productions, collaborating with well-known flamenco artists. This experience allowed her to establish many contacts in the industry and forge her own unique style. In Madrid, she also had the opportunity to dance in the prestigious Madrid flamenco troupe, Flamenco de Leones, directed by the well-known flamenco dancer, Jonatan Miró, where she worked with some of the best flamenco artists.
Raquel Lara: flamenco dancing career highlights to date
In 2021 Raquel Lara auditioned for the Madrid Regional Spanish Ballet Corps, a decisive step in her career. Following a rigorous selection process she was chosen to become part of the cast standing out from hundreds of candidates. This exhaustive audition, which consisted of classical dance, variations of the Bolera school of Spanish dances, stylised dance and flamenco was a key moment in Raquel Lara’s career. “When I was chosen to form part of the Madrid Spanish Ballet, it was like a dream come true,” says Lara. “I knew that I had to prove my talent and my love for flamenco and that’s what I did”.
The Madrid Regional Spanish Ballet Corps, directed by the renowned Jesus Carmona, was a crucial platform for Raquel, allowing her to appear in flamenco shows such as “En la memoria del cante, 1922” and “Imagenes”. These shows, both awarded with prizes in the Seville Flamenco Bienal, not only allowed her to showcase her technical skill but also her ability to transmit emotions through dance.
