Isabel Rodríguez: strength and flamenco elegance
A Catalan dancer with her own label and international presence
Her flamenco dance style, shaped on the stages of flamenco shows around the world, reflects remarkable versatility and a deep respect for the flamenco tradition.
Flamenco origins and studies: Catalan roots with an Andalusian soul
Isabel Rodríguez Jiménez was born in Barcelona on 3 February 1987. Her passion for dance emerged at a very young age and she began her formal training at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, one of the most prestigious performing arts institutions in Spain. She later continued her studies at specialist flamenco schools, including those of La Tani and Paca García, key mentors who provided Isabel with a solid technical foundation and a profound connection to traditional flamenco.
This combination of academic training and hands-on learning from such important flamenco figures marked the beginning of a professional journey that soon began to bear fruit.
First steps on the flamenco stage
At the age of 15, Isabel began her professional career by joining the Catalan company “Somorrostro”, under the direction of the renowned Javier Latorre. With the production Andanzas, she toured major venues and took part in festivals such as El Grec in 2003 and Nou Barris in 2004, events that gave her early recognition from both audiences and critics.
In 2005, she crossed borders to perform at the flamenco tablao in Tokyo. This international experience not only consolidated her versatility, but also prepared her for a fast-moving career. On returning to Barcelona, she continued to perform at iconic venues in the city such as El Carmen and Los Tarantos, staying in contact with the local flamenco scene.
Global flamenco career
Since 2006, Isabel Rodríguez has been part of the prestigious María Pagés dance company, one of the most acclaimed choreographers and bailaoras in contemporary flamenco. With this company, Isabel has toured the world’s leading theatres, performing in shows across Europe, the Americas and Asia, and taking part in productions that have renewed flamenco’s language through a deep aesthetic and theatrical lens.
At the same time, Isabel has maintained her connection with the tablaos, spaces where the very essence of flamenco is put to the test. She has performed in some of the most renowned tablaos in Madrid, such as the historic Villa-Rosa, and in Seville, as a guest artist at El Arenal. Alternating between grand theatres and intimate tablaos reflects both her versatility and her commitment to the many expressions of flamenco.
Flamenco awards and personal projects
Isabel’s career has also been marked by awards recognising her talent from a young age. In 2002, she was honoured with the Premio Vicente Escudero; in 2004, she received the Juana la Faraona prize at the Jóvenes Valores competition in Hospitalet and in 2010, she won first prize at the inaugural Homenaje a Carmen Amaya competition in Barcelona, a particularly meaningful accolade, given her connection to the city and the legacy of the legendary Catalan bailaora.
That same year, she premiered her own show, Parte De Mí, at the Alameda de Hércules in Seville, as part of the XVI Bienal de Flamenco, one of the world’s most important flamenco festivals. Two years later, she presented Templanza alongside José Antonio Jurado, a production backed by the Casa Patas Foundation, which enabled her to take her art to stages such as the XIII European Cultural Festival in Algeria and to several US cities in 2014.
Present and commitment to flamenco
Today, Isabel Rodríguez continues to develop her career as an established flamenco dancer, combining her work with the María Pagés flamenco dance company with performances in tablaos and festivals. Her presence on stage in Madrid has made her one of the key figures in the current flamenco circuit, offering freshness, skill and a unique expressiveness that resonates with all kinds of audiences.
