Flamenco is based on a unique rhythmic language, with the compás as its fundamental structure. Depending on which style is being performed, the compás can take various forms, from the binary rhythm of tangos to the 12-beat cycles characteristic of soleás and bulerías.

Flamenco cajón

Although hand clapping has traditionally been the main form of percussion in flamenco, over time other elements have been introduced that enrich its rhythmic accompaniment. One of the most prominent is the flamenco cajón, a Peruvian instrument introduced into flamenco in the 1970s that has now become indispensable in many shows.

The flamenco cajón offers a wide range of nuances and adapts perfectly to the various flamenco styles. Its deep, bass tones provide a solid rhythmic foundation, while its sharp, high tones allow for playful accents and rhythmic color.

In addition to the cajón, other elements such as tambourines, knuckle tapping on a table, or the simple heel strikes of the dancers contribute to the richness of flamenco sound.

The interaction between percussion and dance in flamenco

In almost all of the flamenco styles, percussion does not just accompany the music, it is a constant dialogue between musicians and dancers.
